Diabetes Mellitus

Endocrinology – Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes is a chronic illness where a patient’s body is unable to process the amount of sugar in his or her blood. There are several types of diabetes and several different factors that contribute to the cause of diabetes. Some of these factors are lifestyle related and can be modified in order to help control diabetes.

Treatment requires active participation by the patient, including:

  1. Monitoring of blood sugar
  2. Taking medicine as prescribed
  3. Following dietary guidelines
  4. Exercising regularly
  5. Controlling stress

It may take several frequent appointments to accurately assess and start treating your diabetes. After blood sugars are stable, most patients will have regular follow-up appointments every 3 to 4 months. At these follow-up visits, please be sure to bring your blood sugar monitor so that we can obtain the record of your blood sugars at home. Pertinent testing will be done to confirm that the prescribed treatment is appropriate relative to any possible new concerns. During the year, patients are responsible for scheduling their annual eye and dental exams.
